Many of my recent paintings have been solitary narratives in uneventful domestic interiors. These paintings were conceived as I thought about the formal methods artists like Vermeer, Hammershoi, and Hopper used to convey expressive content. Light in particular functions as a signifier for the metaphysical, in its application as paint upon the surface and in its symbolic resonance. Static lines and strategic flatness serve to quiet the images, and color seems to determine the mood in the works that I was looking at.
In conjunction with these formal considerations I have been thinking about the American tradition of art that explores themes of isolation. Within this genre, I have used a personal symbolism that is intended to communicate a subtle narrative. The quiet, still quality that is natural to my work is a visual representation of a particular emptiness and separateness. However the process of painting invites the viewer into this, transitioning the space into a shared intimacy.
